There's something magical about Sedona engagement sessions; they are one of my favorite places to be. The red rocks, the golden light. But sometimes, the very best sessions aren't the ones that go exactly according to plan. They're the ones where a last-minute change of scenery leads to something even more beautiful than you could have imagined. That was what Kailee and Ben’s session was; it definitely didn’t go exactly to plan, but it was one of the most breathtaking shoots ever
When Plans Change for the Better
Every photographer knows that shooting in stunning and popular locations, especially in Sedona, requires flexibility and the ability to pull off a new plan. Popular trailheads fill up fast. Parking lots reach capacity by mid-morning. And on a busy weekend, even the most well-mapped plans can fall apart.
That was almost the case for Kailee and Ben's engagement session. We had originally scouted a different location, one I was really excited about. But when we arrived, the parking situation was a complete no-go. We got stopped and turned around outside the location. No road parking allowed, just circling until someone leaves. The backup plan of waiting for a spot to open up would have eaten into our golden hour window, and just was not going to work for us.
So we pivoted.
I suggested Bootlegger Picnic Area, a spot tucked into Oak Creek Canyon along scenic SR-89A, about nine miles north of Sedona. It's one of those hidden gems that doesn't always make the top of the "best Sedona photo locations" lists, but it absolutely should. Secluded, private, forest, waterfalls, and a swimming hole. The change of plans turned out to be the best thing that could have happened.
Why Bootlegger Picnic Area is a Hidden Gem for Engagement Photos
Bootlegger Picnic Area is part of the Coconino National Forest, and it sits right along Oak Creek. It's a creekside picnic area with easy access from the highway, but once you step down toward the water, it feels completely secluded. Huge pines and canyon walls frame the creek on both sides, and the sound of running water immediately sets a peaceful, romantic tone.
For engagement photos, this location is a dream. Here's why:
A Natural Waterfall Backdrop. One of the first things I discovered when we arrived was a small, waterfall. Nothing dramatic, just a little waterfall that added beautiful texture and movement to the photos, and the sound also just set the scene perfectly. It gave the session a dreamy, almost fairytale vibe.
Endless Rock-Skipping Opportunities. The creek bed is lined with smooth, flat stones, the perfect kind for skipping. And let me tell you, Kailee and Ben took full advantage. Watching them laugh and compete over who could get the most skips out of their rock was one of the highlights of the entire session. It was natural, unposed, and so them. Those candid moments of pure joy are the ones that end up being everyone's favorite photos. We even found a little rock that looked like a heart and that might be my favorite detail from the shoot
Dappled Forest Light. Because Bootlegger sits under a canopy of trees, the light filters through in the most stunning way. Even in the middle of the day, the shade softens everything and creates that warm, glowy look that couples love. By the time golden hour rolled around, the light streaming through the canyon was absolutely stunning. (But if you’re going to shoot here arrive a little earlier because at golden hour it gets a little dark)
Variety in a Small Space. One of the things I love most about this location is how much variety it offers within a short walk. You can get wide shots with the canyon walls, intimate close-ups by the creek, playful shots on the rocks, and romantic portraits under the trees, all without having to hike for miles or move your gear more than a few hundred feet.
A Weekend to Remember
Kailee and Ben didn't just come up to Sedona for the photoshoot. They turned it into a full weekend getaway, a mini trip that included touring their wedding venue and spending quality time together before the big day.
Engagement sessions are about so much more than just getting photos for a save-the-date or a wedding website. They're a chance to pause, to celebrate this season of your life, and to create memories that are just for the two of you. Kailee and Ben leaned into that fully. They made the weekend an experience not just a photoshoot appointment. So often couples accidentally rush through the engagement season of life because of how excited they are to get married (which is exciting), I always remind my clients to enjoy and soak in the moments of being engaged
General tips for Sedona engagement session outfits:
Stick with neutral, earthy tones, creams, tans, soft whites, sage greens, dusty blues
Avoid busy patterns or large logos that can distract from the landscape
Bring layers. Sedona temperatures can shift quickly, especially near the water
Wear comfortable shoes you can walk in, and bring your "nice" shoes for close-up shots
Coordinate with your partner without being matchy-matchy

Tips for a Stress-Free Sedona Engagement Session
Based on my experience with Kailee and Ben (and the many sessions I've photographed in Sedona), here are a few things that can make your own engagement session go smoothly:
1. Build in flexibility. As we learned firsthand, parking and access can be unpredictable. Having a backup location (or a photographer who knows several spots) can save your session. Bootlegger Picnic Area is one of my go-to backup locations for exactly this reason; it's accessible, beautiful, and rarely overcrowded.
2. Time it right. Golden hour, the hour just after sunrise and just before sunset, is your best friend for engagement photos. Make sure you take into account the location you are at, if you’re covered in trees or red rocks, you might lose light faster, but overall the light is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. We timed Kailee and Ben's session to take full advantage of that window, and the results speak for themselves.
3. Make it a date. Turn your engagement session into a whole experience. Plan a weekend around it. Grab lunch at a Sedona spot afterward. Take a hike. Visit your venue. The more relaxed and connected you feel, the more that will show in your photos.
4. Trust your photographer. When we had to change locations at the last minute, there was no stress, no frustration, just a quick decision and a new plan. Kailee and Ben trusted me to find a spot that would work, and that trust made the whole session feel easy and fun. Your photographer knows the area and knows how to work with the light. Let them guide you.
5. Bring something personal. Whether it's a Lego camera, a meaningful piece of jewelry, or a blanket that belonged to a grandparent, personal touches make your photos feel like yours. Kailee and Ben's Lego camera moment is something I'll remember long after the session is over.
Looking Ahead to November
I am so incredibly excited for Kailee and Ben's wedding this November. If this engagement session is any indication of what's to come, their wedding day is going to be absolutely beautiful, full of laughter, love, and those perfectly imperfect moments that make a celebration unforgettable.
Sedona has a way of bringing out the best in people. Maybe it's the energy of the red rocks. Maybe it's the way the light hits the canyon walls at sunset. Or maybe it's just that when you're standing in a place that beautiful, with the person you love, everything else falls away.
Kailee and Ben, thank you for letting me be part of this chapter of your story. From the last-minute location change to the rock-skipping. Every part of your session was a joy to capture. I can't wait for November.
